Assumptions & Methodology

Solar Irradiance Data

Province-level annual solar yields (kWh/kWp) are based on GHI data from the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy's Solar Radiation Data Handbook, validated against PVSyst modelling for typical C&I installations. Values range from 1,550 kWh/kWp (KwaZulu-Natal) to 2,000 kWh/kWp (Northern Cape).

Performance Ratio

A performance ratio (PR) of 80% is applied, accounting for inverter losses, wiring, temperature derating, soiling, and mismatch. This is conservative for well-maintained C&I rooftop systems.

Tariff Rates

Eskom Direct rate (R2.20/kWh) reflects the 2024/25 Megaflex average. Municipal rate (R3.10/kWh) is a blended average across major metros. Actual rates vary by time-of-use period, demand charges, and municipality.

Tariff Escalation

10% annual escalation is based on Eskom's historical average increase over the past decade. NERSA-approved increases have ranged from 8% to 18% annually.

System Cost

R14,000/kWp is a representative turnkey installed cost for C&I rooftop systems (50–500 kWp range) including modules, inverters, mounting, cabling, and installation. Actual pricing depends on system size, roof type, and complexity.

Self-Consumption & Degradation

85% self-consumption ratio assumes typical C&I daytime operations. Panel degradation of 0.5% per year is based on Tier-1 module warranties. CO₂ factor of 1.04 kg/kWh is Eskom's published grid emission factor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this solar savings calculator?
This calculator provides a reliable estimate based on average solar irradiance data for each South African province, standard commercial tariff rates, and typical C&I system performance. Actual savings may vary by 10–15% depending on roof orientation, shading, and site-specific conditions. For a precise proposal, request a free site assessment from our engineering team.
What is the typical payback period for commercial solar in South Africa?
Most commercial and industrial solar installations in South Africa achieve payback within 3–5 years, depending on your electricity tariff, location, and system size. With annual Eskom tariff increases averaging 10%+, the payback period continues to shorten year on year.
Do I need battery storage with my solar system?
For C&I operations that primarily run during daytime hours, batteries are not essential — your solar system generates power when you need it most. However, battery storage can be valuable for load-shedding protection, demand charge management, and extending solar usage into evening hours. Our team can advise on the optimal configuration for your business.
How much roof space do I need for a commercial solar installation?
As a rule of thumb, you need approximately 6 m² of unshaded roof space per kWp of solar capacity. A 100 kWp system, for example, requires around 600 m² of roof area. Our engineers conduct a detailed roof survey to maximise panel placement and energy yield.
What financing options are available for commercial solar?
Livoltek offers multiple financing structures including outright purchase, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) where you pay only for the electricity generated, and solar rental/lease arrangements with zero upfront capital. Section 12B of the Income Tax Act also allows 125% accelerated depreciation on solar assets in year one.
